Resume Writing Tips
The most common format for resumes is chronological, functional and combination. The style you use depends on should be dictated by the profession you’re applying for.
Each resume should be tailored to the job or job description you’re applying for.
Resume Guidelines:
Name, City, State, Phone Number, Email Address. Social Media (Optional)
Objective Statement:
Keep the resume objective statement short and concise (Optional)
Resume Layout, no matter which style you use:
Current employment first (fulltime, contract, remote etc…)
Degree (list the kind of degree) should be listed. List degrees on the front page of the resume. The name of the institution, city and state should be listed
Software and hardware systems and certifications should be listed
Use bullet points
Most resumes (non-management or lead positions) various position should be approx. 1 -2 pages
Managers, supervisors, lead resumes should be approx. 1- 3 pages
Upper management, directors and VP’s resumes may have more pages
Resume Style
Be concise. Check selling and grammar
Each section should be uniform. Spacing and margins 1-1½”
Don’t use I word or first person pronouns
Font size should be 11 or 12 pt. Keep the same font style throughout the resume
Include information and give more details of your current job that relates to the position or job description.
When talking about past positions use short paragraphs or approx. 1-2 bullet points sentences. If the position is relevant to the current position expound on how they relate to each other
Personal information should not be included. High school, birthday, marital status, being a father, mother grandparent etc… If this information is, ask for it may be include on an application.
Employment:
List your current responsibilities with dates and locations. If you have several positions at the same company list them with dates and locations
List full-time, contact positions. Give dates, city and state locations.
Use bullet points
List 3-4 important tasks, responsibilities and/or quantify your unique achievements
Don’t list employments older than 10 years unless it’s relate or is a factor in your current position
